The whole office was buzzing with the news that SBG was being bought out by GigaPix and speculation was rampant about the fate of SBG’s employees. As Tess strode briskly down the hall toward the conference room for her meeting with Jared McCabe, she was grateful the moment of truth, at least for her, had finally arrived. She wiped her damp palms down the front of her skirt before knocking on the door.

“Come in.”

Tess did so, entering the room to face Jared McCabe across the wide polished table. He offered his hand, as he had the first time they met, then gestured for her to be seated.

“As of October first, SBG will become a subsidiary company of GigaPix Corporation and its operations will move to the corporate headquarters in California. I’d like you to come to San Diego to be part of the GigaPix team.” Then he opened one of the folders that were lined up in front of him and outlined the terms of his offer, including a salary that almost made her eyes pop out.

She should have been reaching for a pen, asking where to sign the contract of employment. Instead, she said, “It’s a generous offer.”

Jared closed the folder, his eyes narrowing speculatively on her.

She swallowed. “And I’m grateful for it. But…”

He waited silently.

She swallowed again, not quite believing the words that were coming out of her mouth. But she’d lain awake through most of the night thinking about so many things: her career, her pregnancy and overriding all else, the realization that she’d fallen in love with her baby’s father. And she’d finally understood why she’d been unable to tell Craig about her intention to move to California—because she’d never really intended to go.

Sure, she’d entertained the idea, maybe even dreamed about the possibilities. But the reality was, she couldn’t move three thousand miles away from her best friend, the father of her child, the man she loved.

“But I can’t move to San Diego,” she finished.
